The principle purposes and aims of this Fraternity shall be to build better brothers by encouraging intellectual achievement, improving the public stature of gay people, promoting unity among gay men and supporting a progressive interest in the social and civic welfare of such men.
Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Inc. was founded on January 15th, 1985 on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahasee, FL.
To Build Better Brothers through life-long commitment to the fraternitys five principles Brotherhood, Friendship, Loyalty, Justice and Temperance.
Target I. Health Awareness
Target II. Education
Target III. Political Empowerment
Target IV. History and Heritage
Target V. National Expansion
Delta Phi Upsilon has good reason to be proud of its Founder, for throughout the years he has continuously distinguished himself. From the original inception, Founder Charles has worked for the betterment of black gay society and for the glorification of Delta.
His tenure as the 1st National President proved to be fruitful and important to the fraternity. Under his leadership, the national program was formulated, along with sound membership intake procedures. Our beloved shield and jewel badge were redesigned and presented to the fraternity by him. The use of membership certificates, financial cards and chapter charters was adopted. Our revered rituals were put into print and strict policies regarding their distribution were developed. The first issue of The Torch Magazine, Deltas official organ, appeared during his term of office.
Founder Charles has proven to be a driving power, a virtual one man army in Delta Phi Upsilon. Were it not for his vision, hard work, determination and planning in the early years, our fraternity would likely have expired, or been so dwarfed and restricted, that the organization would have sustained a staggering setback. He was a dynamic leader and advisor to his brothers. Outspoken and nonconforming, he gave his talents of organization to the fraternity in the unrelenting belief that we would someday be a shining example for other groups to follow.
Founder Charles continues to serve Delta Phi Upsilon as the Editor-in-Chief of The Torch Magazine.
The Lambda Chapter of Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on August 28th, 2011 by twelve gentlemen. It was originally founded as an area interest group on May 8, 2008 by three pioneers: David C. Butler, Jr., Darroll A. Screen, and Jamie R. Wallace. Since its inception, the colony has extended the call of brotherhood and service to men throughout the greater Baltimore and Washington Metropolitan areas. The Colony takes ownership of its duty and service to the LGBT and African-American communities by championing a variety of endeavors. Members have been panelists on collegiate and community forums, engaged our youth in college preparation workshops, and facilitated symposiums highlighting issues that need address and redress in our communities, just to name a few.
The Lambda Chapter Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Incorporated is committed to affecting a positive change in our immediate communities, throughout our nation and the world. We challenge every person to reach their full potential by developing a legacy that transcends boundaries and the status quo.

Brother Bayard Rustin - First Honorary Member of Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Inc.
A master strategist and tireless activist, Bayard Rustin is best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest, and most historic nonviolent protests ever held in the United States. He brought Gandhis protest techniques to the American civil rights movement, and helped mold Martin Luther King, Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence.
Despite these achievements, Rustin was silenced, threatened, arrested, beaten, imprisoned and fired from important leadership positions, largely because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era. Five years in the making and the winner of numerous awards, BROTHER OUTSIDER presents a feature-length documentary portrait, focusing on Rustins activism for peace, racial equality, economic justice and human rights.
Today, the United States is still struggling with many of the issues Bayard Rustin sought to change during his long, illustrious career. His focus on civil and economic rights and his belief in peace, human rights and the dignity of all people remain as relevant today as they were in the 1950s and 60s.
Rustins biography is particularly important for lesbian and gay Americans, highlighting the major contributions of a gay man to ending official segregation in America. Rustin stands at the confluence of the great struggles for civil, legal and human rights by African-Americans and lesbian and gay Americans. In a nation still torn by racial hatred and violence, bigotry against homosexuals, and extraordinary divides between rich and poor, his eloquent voice is needed today.
in 1956 (Credit: Associated Press)In February 1956, when Bayard Rustin arrived in Montgomery to assist with the nascent bus boycott, Martin Luther King, Jr. had not personally embraced nonviolence. In fact, there were guns inside Kings house, and armed guards posted at his doors. Rustin persuaded boycott leaders to adopt complete nonviolence, teaching them Gandhian nonviolent direct protest.
Apart from his career as an activist, Rustin the man was also fun-loving, mischievous, artistic, gifted with a fine singing voice, and known as an art collector who sometimes found museum-quality pieces in New York City trash. Historian John DEmilio calls Rustin the lost prophet of the civil rights movement.
